Special Collection Event: Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
Advance registration is NOT required.
Residents of Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and the Town of Scottsville are invited to dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) on Friday, April 17, 2026, and Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9 am-3 pm. The special collection event will take place at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Commercial participation is prohibited. The event is free.
Accepted Items
Each year the RSWA holds a large-scale household hazardous waste collection day. On this day, RSWA accepts additional hazardous substances and ensures that they are properly categorized and directed to a permitted off-site hazardous substance management location. The materials accepted on this day include:
- Acids
- Adhesives
- Antifreeze
- Batteries
- CFLs
- Floor and furniture polish
- Fluorescent tubes
- Gasoline
- Household cleaners
- Kerosene
- Motor oil
- Paint and paint-related products and solvents
- Pesticides
Items We Cannot Accept
- Radioactive waste (including smoke detectors)
- Medical waste (syringes, sharps, etc.)
- Explosives
- Ammunition
- Prescription medicine and/or drugs
- Most compressed gas cylinders
- Type A or B organic peroxides
