Charlottesville, VA… March 19, 2025… Residents of Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, and Town of Scottsville are invited to dispose of their unwanted electronic devices on April 19, 2025 from 9 AM to 3 PM. The FREE semiannual event welcomes cell phones, computers, Plasma/LCD/LED screens, DVD players, VCRs, camcorders, stereos, printers, scanners, corded and cordless telephones, gaming systems, fax machines, adding machines, calculators, and digital cameras.

Advance registration is required. Interested community members are encouraged to visit Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s registration page to sign up for the event. Registration will close 24 hours prior to the event.

Special Notes:

  • Space is limited to the first 440 households.
  • Each registered household can dispose up to 10 items.
  • A maximum of 2 CRT displays are allowed per household (cathode ray tube-style televisions or computer monitors). CRTs count towards the 10-item limit.
  • Only open to Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, and Town of Scottsville residents.
  • Commercial participation is prohibited.

The special collection will take place at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia. Registered households must bring their registration ticket to the event.

Responsible Disposal:

After collecting, the e-waste is transported offsite by a contracted vendor. Devices are broken down into their respective components and material groups. Focus Materials; those that include mercury, CRT glass, and lead solder are isolated, removed, and processed to prevent further environmental contamination. All other materials are shipped to downstream recyclers. These recyclers convert usable materials (plastic, glass, and metals) into marketable commodities.

Prior E-Waste Events:

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority held its last E-Waste Collection Day on September 14, 2024. Over 400 households participated in the event. Approximately 35,000 pounds of old and broken electronic devices were collected.

Upcoming Free Collection Days:

This event is one of five upcoming free collection days planned during the months of April and May. All five events are intended for residents only. More information about the events can be found on Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s website.

On April 25 and 26, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will host a Hazardous Household Waste Collection from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The free event welcomes paints, petroleum products, household cleaners, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent tubes, acids, adhesives, antifreeze, stains, paint thinners, spray paint, inkjet cartridges, photographic chemicals, mercury thermometers, driveway sealers, pool chemicals, resins, thermostats, and much more! Advance registration is not required for this event. Residents can drop off their items at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia. Please note that latex and oil-based paints are accepted for free every day at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center; just notify the scale house attendant for directions.

On May 3, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will host a Furniture & Mattress Collection Day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The free semiannual event accepts recliners, sofas, loveseats, tables, chairs, bed frames, dressers, entertainment centers, mattresses, nightstands, coffee tables, and more! Advance registration is not required for this event. Residents can drop off their furniture at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia.

On May 10, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will host an Appliance Collection Day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The free event accepts refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, kitchen stoves, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, microwaves, and toasters. Advance registration is not required for this event. Residents can drop off their appliances at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia.

On May 17, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority will host a Tire Collection Day from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The free event welcomes consumer-bought tires originally installed on passenger cars, pickup trucks, minivans, motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, lawnmowers, go-carts, and handcarts. Participating households may bring up to twelve tires. Tires do not have to be removed from their rims. Unfortunately, commercial truck tires will not be accepted. Advance registration is not required for this event. Residents can drop off their tires at the Ivy Solid Waste & Recycling Center, located at 4576 Dick Woods Road, Charlottesville, Virginia.
